PRIMARY FUNCTION: Position is responsible for bus operations by dispatching employees to ensure that school bus routes are covered. The dispatcher monitors bus runs to ensure driver response for all runs for regular and special education students, activity and athletic programs, and field trips ensuring each schedule follows established guidelines and procedures. This role monitors radio and responds to unexpected situations to include major events such as school bus accidents and inclement weather.

 

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director (Operations)

SALARY SCHEDULE: (Grade 8 with CDL/Grade 6 without CDL)

WORK DAYS: 250

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education Level: High School Diploma

Preferred: An Associate's Degree; or 60 semester / 90 quarter hours of college credit from an accredited organization

 

  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • One year of experience in school transportation, as a driver, scheduler or dispatcher
  • Thorough knowledge of school bus transportation operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of school locations and local roadway systems.
  • Strong analytical and organization skills
  • Must be able to interpret written instructions and provide oral communication; ability to communicate effectively in person and with a 2-way radio system
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to drive a school bus.
  • Ability to collect and organize detailed information and prepare required reports.
  • Commercial Driver’s License within 120 days of employment with all appropriate/required endorsements for operating a school bus
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Skill in the use of data and word processing equipment

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  1. Assures that buses and drivers are available for all daily routes and special occasion routes.
  1. Assigns daily and weekend charters and community bus trips.
  2. Assigns standby drivers to routes in emergencies/absences.
  3. Assures effective, safe, and timely dispatch of buses.
  4. Monitors two-way radio communication while buses are enroute.
  5. Maintains a daily log of information concerning bus operations.
  6. Coordinates bus repairs between drivers and bus garage.
  7. Locates responsible parties to receive special education students when parent/guardian is not present.
  1. Resolves complaints from community and school personnel.
  2. Distributes information to bus drivers.
  3. May drive a school bus as needed.
  4. Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 250 days. Salary will be determined based on level of certification and allowable experience. Exempt
