PRIMARY FUNCTION:  This position is responsible for the collaboration with staff on short, medium and long-term planning to develop Literacy in relation to: resources continuous professional development of staff, goals of the district, including its policies and practices regarding literacy and challenging target for improvement.

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Curriculum and Instruction         

SALARY SCHEDULE:  Teacher

WORK DAYS:  229

 

Education:

 

REQUIRED: Educational Level: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

 

PREFERRED: Higher degree in English, Reading, Literacy or Language from an accredited college or university; Educational Leadership Certificate.

 

 

Experience, Skill and Certification:

 

REQUIRED:

  • Must have clear-renewable certification in Elementary Education or Middle School Reading Education.
  • At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching in the content area.
  • Evidence of demonstrated knowledge and experience with standards-based curriculum, instruction and assessment in reading and or literacy.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and teacher training.
  • Successful recent/current experience in leadership activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and writing skills.

PREFERRED:

 

  • Successful experience planning and delivering professional development.
  • Experience as a mentor or in other teacher-leader roles.
  • Teacher Support Specialist endorsement.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. To be accountable for the standards of teaching and learning and student progress in Literacy throughout the district K-5 schools.
  2. Effectively lead, develop and enhance the classroom practice of teaching staff and teaching assistants.
  3. Lead, manage and develop Literacy throughout the district.
  4. Required to take responsibility for the development and implementation of the whole district policy for Literacy.
  5. Use national, local and school management data to monitor standards achievement across the school in Literacy.
  6. Monitor the progress made towards achieving targets and use this information to plan future developments.
  7. Collaborate with staff on short, medium and long- term planning to develop literacy in relation to: resources continuous professional development of staff, goals of the district, including its policies and practices regarding literacy and challenging targets for improvement.
  8. Plan and monitor coverage, continuity and progression in literacy throughout the district.
  9.  Evaluate the teaching and learning of Literacy in the school through monitoring activities including, but not limited to:  
  • Lesson observations
  • Work and planning scrutiny
  • Pupil discussions
  • Analysis of results and assessment data
  • Attending planning meetings
  • Leading staff training
  • Informal discussions
  1. Establish resource and staff requirements for Literacy and inform the principal/central office staff of costs and priorities.
  2. Distribute resources to meet the objectives of the school.
  3. Ensure the effective and efficient management of learning resources for Literacy – including the school library.
 

Terms of Employment

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 229 days. Salary will be determined based on level of certification and allowable experience. Exempt.  Revised 5-17
