PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position is responsible for planning and scheduling efficient and safe school bus routes utilizing computer assisted routing software.  Responsible for the direct supervision of assigned routing staff.

 

REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Support Services 

SALARY SCHEDULE: A5-M

WORK DAYS: 250

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education Level: High School Diploma, Vocational Certification

Preferred: Additional specialized/technical training in computer technology and data entry

                Associates degree

 

Experience, Skill, and Certification: 

 

  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • At least 3 years of experience in pupil transportation routing/scheduling 
  • Demonstrate skill with Microsoft Office software and general office procedures
  • Working knowledge of the local street and road system
  • Effective oral and written communications skills; customer service skills; effectiveness in diffusing stressful situations; ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions 
  • Ability to use school bus routing software, web page technology and other relevant computer applications
  • Prioritize assignments; manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain confidentiality 
  • Thorough knowledge of state and local laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding bus routes, stops, and driver requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and hazards and related safety precautions
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate and organized records and compile reports

Preferred:

  • Work experience with transportation of students 
  • Work experience with transportation of people with special needs
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, and regulations related to student transportation 
  • Knowledge of roadways and communities in Chatham County 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Designs, coordinates, and implements both regular and special education routing 
  2. Develops safe and efficient bus routes for students within the framework of Board of Education policies and procedures, using computerized Geographic information System (GSIC) based routing software. This includes developing, implementing, and monitoring bus routes, runs, and stops for peak safety and efficient transport of students and staff.
  3. Supervises the work of assigned routing staff.
  4. Monitors and manages student load counts on buses.
  5. Assists with the coordination of the collection of student transportation information to establish a state report database and for completion of required State reporting.
  6. Receives written, telephonic, and electronic requests from parents, school staff, and District staff related to establishment, or change, in bus routes and bus stops. 
  7. Produces and disseminates student ridership and eligibility reports and attendance boundary information. Maintains route-related records and assists in recommending bus equipment requirements. 
  8. Reviews requests for changes to bus stops. Performs physical inspection of location. 
  9. Determines student transportation eligibility, including hazardous walking areas. Receives notices form parents requesting bus transportation for their student(s); investigates and analyzes walking and crosswalk conditions. 
  10. Generates reports as necessary. Creates and maintains weekly reports to track duties performed, students serviced and performance measures.
  11. Maintains and updates school system bus routes and routing information, updates Savannah-Chatham County School System's website with routing changes, correcting, and updating time schedules and route maps. 
  12. Maintains Bus Route Locator data on the internet for use by the public in determining bus schedules for students.
  13. Publishes hard-copy routes for school bus drivers; issues updated routes whenever changes are made in bus stop times or locations. 
  14. Takes appropriate action to resolve transportation concerns, including resolving emergency transportation issues in an effective manner.
  15. Analyzes and validates route schedules; verifying drivers are performing routes as assigned.
  16. Assesses effectiveness of routes and schedules to deliver and return students.
  17. Coordinates with transportation vendor to ensure routes are scheduled in the most safe and efficient manner.
  18. Provides routing information to assist management in the supervision and evaluation of department personnel.
  19. Assists with budget development, state reports, billing, and dispatch. 
  20. Assists in the preparation and execution of route bid processes.
  21. Assists and trains transportation staff on computerized routing system operation.
  22. Coordinates with program manager, school, and District personnel to schedule routes for special programs, summer school, Extended School Year, etc.
  23. Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Incumbents will be considered “at will.” Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. The work calendar will be 250 days. EXEMPT (A5-M)
