PRIMARY FUNCTION: Position is responsible for listening to, understanding, interpreting, and translating spoken or written Spanish. The position helps and supports staff on school functions and school-based family involvement in programs, activities, and events. Provides simultaneous interpretation for the effectiveness of school operations and school-to-home partnerships.

SALARY SCHEDULE: $15 an hour

EDUCATION REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Native fluent Spanish speaker with English proficiency or three years of Spanish classes.
  • Ability to provide simultaneous interpretation support services.
  • Available during school hours and sometimes evening and/or weekends.
  • Understanding of the needs of the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community.
  • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in Spanish and English.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills - ability to work well with a diverse culture and population.
  • Ability to sustain communication and support students, parents, teachers, and school staff.

Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook as well as software applications relevant to areas of responsibility.

 

Preferred:

  • Oral proficiency level of Intermediate High or higher on the ACTFL OPI.
  • Written proficiency of Intermediate High or higher on the ACTFL WPT.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  1. Facilitates accurate and effective communication between school staff and Spanish-speaking families.
  2. Maintains confidentiality in all areas and maintains appropriate professional boundaries.
  3. Attends family school events, activities, and meetings to act as an official interpreter to facilitate engagement and discussions.
  4. Translates documents and materials for Spanish-speaking families.
  5. Relays concepts and ideas between English and Spanish.
  6. Assists with proofreading translated documents from English to Spanish and in coordination of internal and external resources and support for Limited English Proficient families.
  7. Facilitates interpretation in one-on-one or group settings.
  8. Assists with interpretation at parent-teacher conferences, family engagement events, public meetings, and district-level events.
  9. Provides Interpretation of both legal terminology and colloquial language.

Performs other duties related to interpreting as assigned.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Incumbents will be considered “at will.”  This position is temporary a paid an hourly rate of $15.00 as determined by Human Resources. Temporary positions are not eligible for employee benefits and enrollment into to the retirement systems of Georgia.  This is a 229-day position.

 

The position is grant funded and is subject to grant renewal.
