PRIMARY FUNCTION: Savannah Chatham County Public Schools Transportation Department’s training program is for individuals who apply for training to attend classroom instruction on county and state laws, student management, loading and unloading students, radio procedures, emergency and accident procedures, special education laws and overview, expressway driving and a review of the driver handbook to be eligible to acquire a CDL so he/she may be hired as a school bus driver.

 

REPORTS TO: Director, Special Needs Services, Training and Safety

SALARY SCHEDULE: Flat training fee is $13.65 per hour.

 WORK DAYS: This is a temporary training agreement for the entire training program and cannot exceed 90 days.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education Level: High School Diploma or equivalent
  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification: 
  • Valid State Driver License (must be at least 21 years of age to obtain license)
  • Have held a valid state driver’s license for a minimum of the 5 previous years
  • Ability to lift equipment and/or student weighing 40 pounds
  • Written and oral communication
  • Pre-employment physical examination
  • After completing the interview process and before attending training, eligible candidates must successfully obtain aState of Georgia class B, CDL drivers permit.
  • Must successfully complete Bus Driver Training Program with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements provided by Savannah Chatham County Public SchoolsTransportation Department within 3 months of the training starting date.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Obtain CDL permit before beginning training. (Non-compensated classes are available through the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Transportation Training Department to obtain permit.) 2. Obtain CDL License with S & P endorsement within 3 months of entering the internship program.
  2. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance; work hours may vary during the school year.
  3. Contacts dispatch during timeframe published in the Driver’s Handbook to report same day absences.
  4. Trains to drive designated routes according to stop schedule and transport students to and from school.
  5. Demonstrates ability to perform pre-trip inspection of bus as required by department regulations and post-trip inspection for children who may be left on bus.
  6. Demonstrates ability to fuel assigned bus as needed and records data in auto-fueling system.
  7. Delivers bus to Fleet Maintenance shop as directed by pre-arranged schedule and as needed.
  8. Ability to be proficient submitting all reports and corrective time sheets in a timely manner as required by Transportation department. 10. Attends required training meetings as requested.
  9. Ability to be proficient in operating a school bus in accordance with the laws of Georgia and in accordance with the policies prescribed by the Savannah Chatham County Public School District under all types of weather conditions including, but not limited to, sun, fog, rain, sleet, hail, snow, and ice.
  10. Operates bus without receiving a traffic violation or warning citation from state or local law enforcement.
  11. Operates the bus without any preventable accidents as determined by Risk Management during the evaluation period.
  12. Maintains external and internal cleanliness of bus as required for safe comfortable operation.
  13. Monitors/operates communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
  14. Proficient in conducting emergency evacuation drills as required.
  15. Reports delays, accidents, and unusual situations to the Transportation Department.
  16. Exhibits cordial relations with parents, administrators, other employees, and the general public.
  17. Ability to maintain student discipline on the bus and refers serious infractions to appropriate administrator using District approved process.
  18. Collects, maintains, and periodically updates emergency information and is aware of students’ medical needs reported by parents/guardian/school staff.
  19. Presents professional appearance.
  20. Has ability to drive any make and model bus in the transportation fleet.
  21. Special Education Lift Bus Only: Operates wheelchair lift and secures door on lift during transport.
  22. Special Education Lift Bus Only: Performs necessary tie downs for wheelchairs and seat security devises for students.
  23. Perform other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a paid training program for the purpose of becoming eligible for full time employment as a School bus driver. This is a temporary training agreement for the entire training program and cannot exceed 90 days. Flat training fee is $13.65 per hour. No more than 40 hours in any one week.
