Job Summary 

Custodians at TIMA should be self-motivated and professional.  They are able to attend our facilities with integrity and attention to detail. This role is an integral part of our school. Custodians are responsible for general care, cleaning, and minor maintenance of the building, grounds, and equipment on campus. Custodians will work consistently to provide a clean, hazard-free and safe environment for staff and students.

This position is the custodial leader for a facility with less than 70,000 s.f., and as such, assumes full responsibility for all custodial responsibilities to include building hygiene, light daily maintenance and basic safety.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of the school facilities by performing custodial activities, including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, buffing, scrubbing, and waxing floors, cleaning bathrooms, carpets, and collecting and disposing of trash and debris from building and grounds.
  • Responds to staff inquiries and maintenance concerns in a timely manner, providing accurate and reliable information as well as hands-on assistance whenever and wherever conditions require.
  • Ensures all classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and other areas have been properly cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis.
  • Collaborates and follows-up with staff in ordering supplies, sharing pertinent information, and ensuring overall school cleanliness.
  • Performs and documents regular walkthroughs of buildings and grounds along with corrective action taken.
  • Orders and maintains an adequate inventory of cleaning/maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Removes all unnecessary debris and trash when necessary as well as monitoring trash removal schedule. Actively engages in school wide recycling initiatives.
  • Ensures all restroom supplies (paper, soap, etc.) are fully stocked immediately each day.
  • Arranged chairs, tables and other equipment as requested.
  • Monitors and maintains HVAC systems to ensure efficient performance and initiates corrective action when appropriate.
  • Assembles, installs, delivers, or moves furniture and/or equipment as necessary.
  • Ensures buildings are properly heated/cooled, cleaned, and locked/unlocked, and ready for all school activities.
  • Assists with setup and cleanup for special events, conferences and performances
  • Perform routine proactive maintenance as required, including changing light bulbs and ballasts, repairing locks or other hardware; painting and plastering surfaces in disrepair, performing minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs, etc.
  • Actively engages in scheduled maintenance, including during winter break, spring break, and summer vacation.
  • Identifies and reports safety and emergency repairs to the Operations Manager and reports any acts of vandalism and breakage.
  • Inspects school outdoor areas, exterior doors and exterior gates weekly, advising Operations Manager of potential safety concerns and performing routine maintenance to ensure student safety.
  • Collaborates with school leadership and other staff in the coordination of school activities requiring maintenance and custodial support. Keeps school leadership informed of all necessary information. Keeps accurate records of all maintenance activities; composes and distributes accurate and clearly written reports as required.
  • Be familiar with and support school leadership in the effective implementation of the school’s Emergency Response Plan.
  • Conduct monthly safety checks on equipment such as fire extinguishers, emergency lights, and exit lights.
  • Perform maintenance of the building, such as drywall repairs; minor carpentry; assembling classroom furniture; replacing light bulbs, & fixtures; painting projects; ceiling tile replacement; playground maintenance, athletic areas, grounds repairs; equipment audits, building inspections; safety issues, repairs; small landscaping projects; additional items as they arise.
  • Respond to cleanup emergencies in a timely manner, including clearing plumbing stoppages and cleaning up bodily fluids (e.g., vomit)
  • Monitor and report necessary repairs and safety concerns to the Operations Manager.
  • Coordinate activities in the absence of the Operations Manager.
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.

Qualifications

  • Education Level: High school diploma or equivalent Preferred: Related technical college courses or supervisory training 
  • Previous experience in a custodial or maintenance position, in a lead or supervisory role
  • Knowledge of the working methods and procedures used in cleaning and minor maintenance of buildings
  • Knowledge of the qualities and uses of custodial supplies and equipment
  • Knowledge of care and cleaning of various types of heating and ventilation equipment
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations applicable to schools and related buildings
  • Ability to plan and organize the work of self and others involved in the custodial care of buildings
  • Ability to assign, train, and coordinate the work of the custodial crew
  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions and directions and use a computer

Terms of Employment, Salary, and Benefits

Incumbents will receive an at-will annual contract.  The work calendar will be 220 days. 

Salary and Incentives

TIMA pay is aligned with the SCCPSS scale with a salary range of $19.69 - $33.62/ Per Hour

Also included is an additional $150/ month for travel expenses associated with traveling to Tybee Island. 

 

There is a potential for an additional incentive structure aligned to meeting milestones pre-defined by administration.  

 

SALARY SCHEDULE: G-8
